"Leslie! Hannah's here!"

"Okay Mom!" I studied myself in the mirror. "Let's see...blue dress, black stockings, comfortable shoes, good hair..." I made sure to fluff it out a little. "And last but not least, the earrings." I grabbed a pair of sapphire earrings and headed into the bathroom, carefully placing them in each ear. I made a quick check of my teeth, making sure to brush out any leftovers from dinner, and smiled.

Perfect.

I did one last check in the bathroom mirror before heading downstairs. As I came down, I caught a glimpse of Hannah. She was dressed in a pair of black dress shoes, a dark brown pair of slacks and what appeared to be a dark brown jacket with a black blouse underneath. I walked up behind her, trying to look alluring. "Hey Hannah."

She turned around, eyes widening as she checked me out. "Wow. You look amazing." She took me by the hand and twirled me around. "I don't know if I should laugh because you're wearing a dress or if I should say 'wow' again."

"I'll take either compliment. Though if you give me a hard time about wearing a dress, you might not have a date." I paused. "That or next time we have a date night, I'm making you wear a dress."

"Well played."

"Thank you." I reached up, tousling her hair.  "Forget the whole you wearing a dress on a date night thing; it's odd seeing you without your hat."

She smirked. "It's in the car. I plan on putting it back on after the dance."

"You're cute."

Her face turned red. "Yeah yeah." I was just about to lean in and kiss her when Dad walked in.

"There's my girl!" He walked over, giving me a one armed hug. "You look great Sweetie."

"Thanks Dad."

He turned to Hannah. "Now you be good to my little girl tonight. I expect her home by nine."

"Um..."

"Dad!" I whacked him in the shoulder. "That's not funny!"

"I'm only kidding Sweetie." A wave of relief swept across Hannah's face and my Dad smiled. "Don't stay out to late." He kissed me on the cheek. "Text when you're leaving."

I rolled my eyes. "Yes Dad."

"Have fun tonight," Mom said as she walked up, giving me a hug.

"We will Mom." I checked my watch. "We'd better get going; the dance is gonna start soon."

"Okay." She opened the door for us, only to pause. "Wait! I need a photo first!"

"Ugh. Moomm..."

"Now now, this'll only take a moment. Now, where did I leave my cell phone?"

"She doesn't have her cell phone with her?" Hannah whispered.

"No." I rolled my eyes. "She's still learning how to use it."

"Ah. Makes sense."

Mom swept back into the room, phone in hand. "Okay, now on the count of three: one...two...three." She snapped the photo, examining it. "Oh shoot. It's to dark. Here, let's try another one." She snapped another photo, scrutinizing it as before. "Well...that's one's a little better..."

"Mom, we really have to go."

She scrutinized her phone one more time. "I guess it's fine. Have fun tonight. Don't stay out to late and--"

"Text when we're headed back," Hannah finished. She smiled. "We'll be fine Mr. and Mrs. Patterson. Really." She turned to me, offering an arm. "Shall we?"

I grinned, looping my arm through hers as we headed to the car. "We shall."

The gym was decked out with red and white balloons and paper streamers. A stage with a DJ was set up across the way and near that was a red and white archway made of balloons where couples were having their pictures taken.

"Leslie! Hannah!" I turned around, watching as Darin and Mel walked towards us, Mel wearing a normal looking red dress with a split up the side showing off her legs; Darin wearing a pair of loafers, slacks and a collared shirt with a tie.

I smirked once they reached us. "Wow Dare. You clean up nice."

"So do you. Hard to believe I haven't seen you in a dress since we were in seventh grade."

I snorted. "Oh come on. I've worn a dress since then."

"You mean since we've been in high school? Yeah, I'm going with no on that one."

Hannah laughed, turning to me. "Okay, really, how long ago was it? Because I'm just a bit curious myself."

I ignored the jab, counting on my fingers. "Let's see...the last time I remember wearing a dress was to Bobby Marc's birthday party--"

"Which was in seventh grade."

I grumbled, admitting defeat. "Okay, yes. The last time I wore a dress was to Bobby Marc's birthday party, which was in seventh grade. Fine. You got me."

Darin smirked in satisfaction.

"Oh, isn't it wonderful?" Mel twirled around us, swooning. "The whole school coming together for a night of fun and dancing and romance." She got teary eyed. "It's just so sweet and romantic it makes my heart want to break."

Hannah and I started. "Uh, Darin?" I asked. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but...is Mel okay? That was a bit over the top. Even for her."

He shrugged. "She's fine. Just a little to caught up in the romance. She'll come down from the romantic high eventually."

"You might want to grab her," Hannah pointed out. "She's headed for the punch bowl."

"So?"

"I'm pretty sure I saw a guy spike the punch. And if Mel acts like this on a regular basis..."

"Aright!" Darin and I chorused, sharing a high five.

"Uh..."

"Oh yeah! I never told you, did I?"

"Tell me what?"

"Well, you know how when most people get drunk, they're overly hyper and/or obnoxious most of the time?"

"Yeah."

"Mel's the opposite. When she drinks, it actually makes her normal. Or, you know, as normal as Mel is."

"Basically, she doesn't twirl around or swoon as much over things when she's drunk. It's kind of a nice break for us," Darin added.

"Ah."

"Although there was that one time she overdid it on the punch at that one dance about two years ago."

Darin's eyes widened. "Crap! I gotta go grab her!" He sprinted over to the punch bowl before Hannah and I could say another word.

"What happened two years ago?" Hannah asked, intrigued.

"Long story. I'll tell you some other time."

She shrugged. "Alrighty."

"Like hey." I cringed at the voice behind me and was about to turn around when Hannah grabbed me by the shoulders, pushing me behind her.

Her voice was low. "Patricia, what the hell did I tell you about--"

"Oh like, relax. I just came over to like, say hey and stuff." She was dressed in a bubblegum colored dress complete with white tights and some strange looking white dress up shoes. "Besides, my date should be here, at like, any moment."

"Date?" Hannah dropped her guard.

"Yeah. He's--"

"Hi baby." Some guy I had never seen before came up behind her, grabbing her around the waist. "Been waiting for me?" I cringed; he looked greasy and just...gross.

"This is, like, Ethan." Patricia casually pointed behind her, taking the requisiste stick of bubblegum from her pink handbag and popping it into her mouth. "He's like, pretty cool and stuff."

"Come on baby. Let's go dance."

A pink bubble inflated out of her mouth before popping. "Kay." She turned to us. "Like, see you later."

I waited until they were out of earshot. "Eww. He was gross. Did you see how greasy his hair was? It looked like he dumped an entire bottle of oil on his head." I smirked. "Remind me to go to him when my car needs an oil change."

"Heh."

I came out from behind Hannah, studying her. "Babe, are you alright? You don't...want to go back to her, do you?" Oh great; way to sound needy and vulnerable. That's attractive.

"What?! No!" She blinked at me. "Leslie, I would never go back to her." She took me in her arms and held me close. "I was just watching her and wondering what the hell I saw in her and why did I ever date her in the first place?"

I brushed a strand of hair from her face. "You were lonely. You dated the first person that came along who took an interest in you."

Her voice cracked. "But if I did that with Patricia, then how do I know things with us will--"

"Because I won't let them. Hannah, I love you. I will always love you and I will always be there for you. No matter what." I kissed her, reveling in the feeling it gave me.

She pulled back and I swear her eyes were shining. "You love me? That's the first time you've ever said that to me."

I kissed her again. "I say it because it's true." She wrapped me in a bone crushing hug, burying her face in my neck.

"Don't ever let me go okay?"

"Never."
Three revisions of this chapter, with the most minute changes, and I'm still not entirely happy with it. Oh well; I figured if I didn't post it, it would stagnate forever and never get finished. I can always come back and make changes later right?

Chapter 31:  Self Discovery: Chapter 31"So, the doctor said you're good now?" Darin was sitting across from me in our regular booth. Yup; we were back to Saturday Night Pool. Thank god; I'd missed the pool table more than I'd like to admit.
"Yep. He said I was good and didn't have to worry about taking it easy anymore. Which is great, because the bed rest was starting to drive me crazy."
"High five." He put a hand up. When I didn't immediately return it, he faked a pout. "Oh come on. You're really gonna leave me hanging after that one?"
I gave him some skin. "Fine. But only because I'm so happy right now, you couldn't dampen my mood. I mean, honestly Dare? After everything that's happened, I finally feel as though things are going my way."
"So where's Hannah?"
"She text me earlier and said she'd be a little bit late tonight. Said she had to pick something up." I shrugged. "She'll be along."
"Maybe she's getting you a birthday present."
I snorted. "Dude, my birthday's not for another month."
"Still...maybe it's a really earl

Chapter 33:  Self Discovery: Chapter 33"Are you sure you're ready for this?" Hannah and I were at my house. We'd left the dance early and after texting my parents we were headed back, they had replied to say they were visitng my grandparents and wouldn't be back until late tomorrow. At the moment, we were lying on my bed talking.
"Yes. I'm sure."
"But--I mean...Les, I only want to do this if you're sure. I don't want to hurt you or, I dunno, scar you for life."
"Oh sure. The girl who had my motor running over Christmas break whenever I tried to make us breakast; the girl who constantly teased and purporsefully aroused me; now you want to be careful?"
"Well, this time we're...actually gonna do it. I just want to make sure you're ready..." she reached a hand out, sliding it under the t-shirt I had changed into when we got back. Her fingers found my stomach and started massaging, the tips of her fingers pressing into my skin while making little counter-clockwise circles. "For this."
A soft groan escaped my lips as I lai
